Second Chance Fun

This is not my latest project....this is vintage!

Saturday morning is usually the day I go into town for all my errands. I decided it might be fun to swing by the Second Chance resale shoppe and take a little time to browse.

I found this beautiful table runner, hand embroidered. Looking at the soft pinks, yellows and blues, I think it will look nice for the Easter table decorations.

The many hours it must have taken to complete this project. The lace edging is hand crochet.

This little piece, under $1.00, will be perfect for hand washing my dishes.

I believe the wooden cabinet was originally a bread box. The finish could easily be re-stained, but I'm thinking I might paint it. As you can see, it is not a small container.

The wooden cabinet could be used for storage in almost any room of my home. Give me a week or so to decide which room it will be the most useful in.....

If you had found the bread box, how would you make use of it?

  1. What treasures you found! I love the old textiles, too, so much work and thought in them.

  2. Meggie, what wonderful treasures! I would probably use the breadbox in my craft area. I can see it holding reels of ribbon and spools of thread, maybe little tins of buttons. I went thrifting today, but didn't find very much at all - just a couple of Hornsea pottery pieces to match those I bought at the jumble sale last week, and a pure cotton men's shirt which I was going to use for patchwork but J has taken a fancy to it! Most exciting thing today is that the feature wall in the kitchen now has wallpaper on it!

    1. Scarlet, I hope you are feeling better today.
The breadbox can be used for so many things. Especially since I have such a small house and only two closets. I don't blame J for wanting to keep the shirt. I think I might have kept it for myself too. I like to wear men's shirts over my Teeshirt. I roll up the sheeves and leave the front unbuttoned. Oh happy day for the kitchen. I know you are ready for it to be finished!

  3. You found some lovely things today Meggie! What a beautiful table runner - I particularly love the flow of the embroidered ribbon, very simply done in stem stitch (if I remember correctly) but so sweet! Then to crochet the edging as well, that was a labour of love by someone.

As far as the breadbox goes - difficult call but my initial thought was that it would store the trays containing my pots, bottles and tubes of paint. Alternatively it could hold a collection of lovely hand embroidered tray cloths, napkins, etc.

It is a great box and I look forward to seeing how you use it.

    1. I didn't have much time today and the shop is packed full of little treasures. I did the once-over and then went back for these pieces. The table runner is diffinently a labor of love. Wouldn't it something if one could speak to the woman who embroidered this piece. Tubes of paint, you say, for the bread box. Do you paint on canvas?

    1. Life is so busy right now with all the gardening chores. It may be a week or two before I post something on the breadbox. I like handmades too. So much love goes in the work.

  6. After this great find yesterday, I think I might look for more. Even the little potholder has beautiful stitches with the ring crocheted in the work.
