For the Love of Grandparents

My Maternal Grandparents on Their Wedding Day
This past week end, I found a treasure trove of family photos packed away in boxes I had neglected for a few years.

I've always been a "keeper of the past". Lately my interest has intensified with the tracing of my father's Scottish heritage.

The photo is very old, but you can still see some of the intricate details on her headdress, made of flowers and a long veil. The front of the wedding dress is embellished with tiny buttons. It is complete with white gloves covering her hands.

Her story started with me posting More Than Just A Hat last month. After she died, my mother and I sorted through her treasures and I saved one of her hats. It reminded me of how she always loved beautiful lace blouses, decorated with either a bow or a brooch pinned at the neckline.

Extravagant was not a word to describe her. I believe she was a frugal person and would have enjoyed thrifting with the best of us.

My Great-Uncle & Great-Aunt on Their Wedding Day

Here is a surprise in her story....

My Great Uncle was my Grandmother's brother. And, my Great Aunt was my Grandfather's sister. This made for a very close family.

So, I sit here today, remembering holidays and summer school vacations, on the farm, with my grandparents....the gentle demeanor of my grandfather, the soft voice of my grandmother, speaking her native German language.

And, dinner grace being repeated by all...

Komm Herr Jesus. Sei unser Gast,
Und segne, was du uns bescheret hast! Amen

  1. Such a beautiful, gentle post. I enjoyed looking at the exquisite detailing on the dresses and the headdresses. Your box is definitely a treasure trove of photographs and memories. My German is very rusty so I relied on Google for more accurate translation of the dinner grace, it is a lovely one. What happy memories.

    1. You know, I occasionally put the hat on, for no other reason except to know my grandmother wore it.

  5. Dear Meggie, your grandmather and your grandfather were magnificent people. Very good dressed and extra ordinary... You think just like me. Our past is our future.. We had to remember our family and teach them to our children I think. I like all old things and sometimes I am living in the past. I like to live in the past...
Very good photos and very good memories....
    Best wishes..

  7. HI Meggie, I love looking at old photos and its good that you are looking after them. I always feel quite sad when I see old photos at boot sales and such because I know how much I treasure mine of my family.I wish I had photos of great grandparents, there dont seem to be any about in the family.

    1. Hello Anne....I know exactlly what you are talking about. I once bought a box of items from a sale that had old photos mixed in with other sale things. I always wondered whose family they belonged to and if they might be looking for them. I ended up taking them to the library, hoping some family would claim them.

  10. We always said that table prayer when I was a child except in English. I didn't even know it was a German grace.

    1. I'm not so sure if it is a German grace or rather a Lutheran grace.

  11. Wonderful post of your connection to your roots, Meggie. The detail on your grandmother's dress is incredible. I wondered at the boutonniere on both men's left label. The flower they used is the same and probably has some significance? Just curious.

    1. Hi Janet....I'm now wondering where the flowers came from or could they have been artificial. I think they had silk flowers back then...
