Enjoying the Summer Blooms

Do you recognize the bark of this tree? It is from the beautiful Crape Myrtle Tree, sometimes spelled as Crepe Myrtle. The mottled appearance comes from the shedding of it's bark through out the year.

The blooms, this year, are spectacular. This light pink bloom is so heavy the branch is draping over the fence of the Secret Garden.

There are six of these young trees surrounding the outside fence of the Secret Garden. In a few years they will have grown taller than the windows.

I have planted two other colors. This myrtle is a darker pink.

If you are thinking my photo is up-side-down......you would be mistaken. The two white crape myrtles have grown so tall, I had to look up to photograph the flowers.

The white and light pink blooms have a cooling affect for the very hot temperatures in our Texas summers.

  1. Beautiful blossome! Do the young trees shed their bark?

  4. Oh Meggie, you have just reminded me how much I miss that tree. They just don't do well in this part of the country and it's the first home we've had without one. It's such a part of my memory growing up at my parent's home and my grandparents. The blooms are spectacular--one that I'll have to do in paper to enjoy here! XOXO

  8. I love the feel of our crepe myrtle tree bark. So smooth. I love the pic you took. Ours never has that much contrast in the bark though, so pretty!

  9. What a wonderful tree - so you get double the beauty with that bark and the flowers. I love the intriguing glimpses of the Secret Garden, but most of all I love those frothy blossoms.

  10. What gorgeous blooms. I don't think we have those trees here in Iowa but I should check that out. Are these at your old home or in your new one?? I would hate to leave them behind if they are at your present house!! Hope your move is going okay.
