Can you believe while out for a drive, to a nearby town, I came across an 18 foot tree loaded with large round yellow fruit?
Looking at the tree, from inside my truck, I thought they might be golden apples.
I had just rolled a little past the house, when I noticed someone sitting on the front porch.

Now, I wished I had photographed her, using a long pole gadget, that seemed to grab the grapefruit off the tree.
She told me it was a very old tree, planted by the previous owner. I had no idea a tropical tree could grow this tall in my part of Texas.
After all, we can have some very harsh winters with temperatures often below freezing.
I've since found a recipe for Grapefruit Marmalade. I plan to make some next week end from my fresh grapefruit....

How wonderful! I certainly enjoyed seeing your blue sky and sunshine. Grapefruit marmalade is my favourite as I don't like my marmalade too sweet.
ReplyDeleteHello Scarlet....Thanks for the tip about sweetness. I'll keep it in mind when making the marmalade. I, also, like jams a little less sweet.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, grapefruit marmelade. Sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'll do a follow-up post, when I make it. It will be a first for me. This year, my daughter's husband made lime marmalade.
DeleteI'm really surprised the grapefruits survived the past couple of weeks. (Maybe I just feel colder than it really is.) Wonderful tree. I do know people who grow lemons in the area. Never had grapefruit marmalade, but I'll bet it is delicious.

Hi Janet....I was totally surprised! You would think the freezing temperatures we've had, would have made the tree drop it's leaves. It was on the south side of the house, so maybe it provides just enough protection. But, isn't it beautiful !!
ReplyDeleteThey probably wouldn't be good for eating but marmalade seems like a good way to use them. I look forward to hearing how the process turns out!
ReplyDeleteActually, they are very sweet....but, the marmalade sounds very interesting.
DeleteThe grapefruit look wonderful and when I looked at the picture of the 3 of them, I think I could actually smell them!!! I will be interested in hearing about the marmalade, I have never heard of it or lime marmalade but love orange marmalade myself..
ReplyDeleteNeither had I, but I google searched and found several recipes....
DeleteI have never seen grapefruit on a tree before...it all seems so exotic!
