The Southern Magnolia Bloom...Flower of the Week

How lucky I am to have this lovely Southern Magnolia tree growing so near the cottage. The blooms are one of the largest flowers in Northern America, having a diameter of 14 inches.

The tree has already reached a height of approximately 18 feet tall. Eventually it could grow from 60 to 80 feet.

What a surprise to see a bud like this, open to such a beautiful flower.

The stamens, as they drop, often collect in the concave petals.

Bees are attracted by the legendary fragrance of the blooms.

  1. I enjoyed these blooms when I lived in GA and, surprisingly enough, there are quite a few of these Southern beauties around here in New Zealand!

  3. What a stunning flower. Magnolias are my favourite flowering trees but I have never seen one like yours. Perhaps they wouldn't grow in the UK?

    1. Hi Marianne...I think you may be correct. The magnolia may need the long warm (hot) summers to do well.

  4. What a beautiful flower. It's different to our magnolias- they get their flowers before their leaves each spring, so they look as if beautiful blooms have been attached to twigs!

  8. I will have a Southern Magnolia in my next collection that previews in July--I think it is one of the more perfect flowers out there and will certainly plant some at our new home, XOXO
